Staying Connected: Community and Social Activities for Older Australians
Social connection is one of the most powerful predictors of health, happiness and longevity in older age. Australia has a rich network of community groups, clubs and programs specifically designed for older Australians.
The Importance of Social Connection
Research consistently shows that social isolation is as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Loneliness in older adults is associated with higher rates of depression, cognitive decline, and premature death. Finding community is not a luxury — it's a health priority.
Types of Programs Available
- Learning programs (U3A): Free or low-cost classes in hundreds of subjects
- Social clubs (Probus): Regular meetings, outings and travel with like-minded retirees
- Men's Sheds: Hands-on community space with strong mental health evidence base
- Volunteer programs: Giving back provides purpose and community connection
- Exercise groups: Many councils offer free or subsidised fitness programs for seniors
Finding Local Programs
Your local council is an excellent starting point — most councils have a seniors officer or healthy ageing team with comprehensive information about local programs. My Aged Care also provides a service finder for community support services.
Program availability and eligibility vary by location. Contact local organisations directly to confirm current offerings.
