NDIS and Disability Services for Older Australians
The NDIS provides funded support for eligible Australians under 65 with a permanent and significant disability. Australians who develop a disability at or after age 65 are generally supported through the aged care system instead.
NDIS vs Aged Care — Understanding the Boundary
- Under 65 with permanent disability: Apply to NDIS
- 65 and over with support needs: Apply through My Aged Care
- Existing NDIS participant who turns 65: Can choose to stay on NDIS or transition to aged care
NDIS Support Categories
NDIS funding is divided into three support budget categories: Core Supports (daily activities, community participation, transport), Capital Supports (equipment, home modifications, specialist accommodation) and Capacity Building Supports (therapy, skill development, support coordination).
Support Coordination
Support coordination funding in your NDIS plan helps you understand and use your plan effectively, connect with providers and resolve service issues. Not all participants receive this — it's worth requesting if your situation is complex.
