Home Care in Australia: How the System Works
As of November 2025, Australia's home care system has transitioned to the new Support at Home program, replacing the previous Home Care Packages and simplifying access to in-home support.
What Support at Home Covers
- Personal care (showering, dressing, grooming)
- Domestic assistance (cleaning, laundry, meal preparation)
- Nursing care and allied health services
- Social support and transport
- Home modifications and assistive equipment
How to Access Home Care
All government-funded home care starts with an assessment through My Aged Care (myagedcare.gov.au or 1800 200 422). An ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team) assessment determines your level of need and funding entitlement.
Choosing a Home Care Provider
Once approved, you choose your own provider. Key questions to ask: What are your management fees? Can I direct my own care? What happens in an emergency? Do you have staff available in my area?
